And it is the first day of President Biden’s 2 day Leaders Summit on Climate
The first Earth Day was in 1970, marking the start of the Environmental movement in the USA, so it is significant that President Biden chose 22nd April as the first day of his 2 day virtual Leaders Summit on Climate.
He invited 40 World Leaders to his summit and they are all coming, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping. This Summit is the start of negotiations leading up to the UN COP26 in Glasgow in November. And if this is to work China, the world’s current worst producer of Greenhouse gases and the USA, historically the worst polluter, must co-operate.
Biden is expected to announce a new US emissions target of at least 50% below 2005 levels, but scientists predict an enormous rise in fossil fuel emissions as countries struggle to recover from Corona Virus.
Watch it live on YouTube from 8am American EDT, which I think is 1 pm here!
